Philip Spiess has worked as a live sound and recording engineer since 2005. He started his career apprenticing under Jim Bienemann and Mike Atherton at Common Ground on the Hill. He has gone on to do audio mixing and engineering for Taylor Swift, The Seldom Scene, Jack White, Jeff Beck, Afghan Whigs, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Sierra Hull, Tony Trischka, Walt Michael and Company, and many more. Philip currently actively tours as the monitor engineer for Oliver Anthony and the front of house audio engineer for Carbon Leaf, The Stews, and the Dirty Grass players. When not touring he runs his own recording studio and vintage audio gear repair shop as well as working as an A1 for Southard Audio. Southard Audio services Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania providing audio for festivals colleges and other organizations large scale events. Philip is one of the audio engineers for IBMA, Del Fest, The Red Wing Roots Music Festival, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, North Carolina Folk Festival, Richmond Folk Festival, and The Blue Highway Festival. He is the front man and song writer for the band Probably Whiskey and is also is a member of the Grammy’s actively assisting in lobbying congress for musician and music industry professional rights.
