Discover how can we get back to civil political discourse through discussion and exercises.
We will explore the political issues dividing American public opinion, first by identifying the issues, then by laying out and discussing the positions of those on both sides. Next we will identify and discuss the pros and cons of these positions. Then we will attempt to find some common ground shared by those on both sides of each issue. Finally, students will team up and engage in a debate (a real one) on an issue chosen by the students—the objectives being for team members to clearly defend the position they have been assigned and to find common ground between the opposing teams. Bring paper and pencil and an open mind.
Schedule a week or two, or three! Or, just sprinkle some classes in between other commitments.
