Karen Ashbrook has been involved with dulcimer since the mid-70s when she built her first one as a high school project. She had been a pioneer in the promotion of the dulcimer nationally and internationally. In 2021, Karen was recognized as a Master Folk Artist through the Maryland State Arts Council and is working with an apprentice to pass on the American dulcimer traditions and repertoire. Karen works as a therapeutic musician at Georgetown Hospital and Walter Reed Military Medical Center and is passionate about using dulcimer music for healing and encouraging other musicians to do the same. Her current favorite patient quote, "You make my heart happy!"
