Beginning students will learn the basics of seat weaving using shaker tape on a stool project. The students are then encouraged to bring another project (chair, stool, frame) to complete. Students can experiment with color and pattern. Returning students can bring a variety of projects to weave. They can experiment weaving Shaker tape, reed, cane, rush, Danish cording or fiber that they choose.

Students should contact the instructor by June 20 to discuss their project.

Limit 8 students, ages 16 and up.

Materials Fee: $24-56 in advance, depending on student choices. See info below.

Student should bring:

  • Stool and additional project (see info below)
  • Shaker tape
  • Scissors
  • two (1 inch or 2 inch) spring clamps
  • flat head screwdriver
  • tape measure
  • Upholstery tacks
  • small hammer

PRIOR to the start of class, students will order a stool frame and shaker tape needed for that stool and another project of their choice. Allow at least 2 weeks for your order.

Recommended supplier: Suzanne Moore’s North Carolina Basket Works (https://www.ncbasketworks.com) because they have the best prices. The stools frames range from $8.00 to $26 depending on size and species of wood and the shaker tape for the stool project ranges from $16-$26 based on width and color. The students will need to have another project piece and will need to figure how much shaker tape to order.

How to Measure and Calculate the Amount of Shaker Tape for a Seat:

  • Measure the seat (width) at its widest point. Measure the seat depth-front rail to back rail.
  • Multiply the width (in inches) by the depth (in inches).
  • Divide by 9 for 1" tape. Divide by 5.3 for 5/8" tape. Your answer will be in total yards required.
