Design and create a metal flower or leaf for use as a pendant, earrings or other adornment.
Students will brainstorm about plants that are important to them and then collect, photograph and sketch flowers and leaves in preparation for this class. Patterns should be drawn in a size appropriate for their intended use, e.g., pendants, earrings, rings, belt buckles, etc.
Using jewelers saws and blades, bench and French shears students will cut out their designs. Using mallets, dapping punches, chisels, leather and wood tools students will shape their plant forms. Students will practice soldering to attach findings to make these wearable. Hallmarks, polishing and finished techniques will be practiced.
NOTE: Students who want to investigate the cultural and historic meaning of plants should consider registering for Plants Speak taught virtually in Traditions Week 1, Pd. 5.
