Changing the Plane, Direction, and Diameter of Silver with Hammers
Forging deals with thick lines of metal wire that get thinner, like vines growing towards the light and lines in calligraphy - first thick and bold, then delicate and curving with a flourish. Learn techniques to create dramatic designs from heavy gauge sterling or copper wire. Hammers, rolling mill, draw plates, upright sander, files, sandpaper and buffers are only some of the tools used to coordinate what you design with what you make. Change of plane and direction, diminished diameter forging, and other techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. Soldering and finishing processes will be practiced. With patience, beginners will amaze themselves with several graceful pieces of jewelry. Intermediate to advanced metalsmiths will develop a new vocabulary to add to your lexicon of design and construction skills in addition to creating several stunning pieces of forged jewelry. Other techniques like repoussage, piercing, fabrication, and beading may be incorporated. Level: Beginner and beyond.
