Students will carve, finish and paint a pair of stylized courting Virginia Rails in a very expressive manner. The instructor is a master carver who will share his wisdom and experience about carving wood, bringing life to a bird sculpture, as well as demonstrate his finishing techniques. Finished sculpture will be signed, then mounted on brass rods on a finished hard wood base. You will be creating a sculpture you can treasure forever!

Rich Smoker is a 2019 National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow, which is the highest honor in folk and traditional arts.

NOTE: This is a 3 period class!

Limit: 10 students, ages 16 and up

Materials Fee: $50 includes wood blanks, the hard wood stand that finished work will be on, all the fillers, the glass eyes, paint, brass rods.

Students should bring:

• work apron
• materials to take notes
• cell phone to photograph process or demonstrated techniques
• If student has their own carving set and whetstone bring it!
