Choro, also popularly called chorinho ("little cry" or "little lament"), is an instrumental Brasilian popular dance music genre which originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro. A fusion of African-based rhythms and structures, choro manifested in the dances the Lundu and the Maxixe, featuring European instruments and dance forms, the polka and the waltz. The music often has a fast and happy rhythm. Instruments featured in Choro are often flute, clarinet, mandolin, cavaquinho (relative of the ukulele) and guitar.
