Lace making comes in many forms and has a rich history going back hundreds of years. Lace was a sign of wealth for the fashionable elite from the 17th to the 19th century and employed many women (yes, usually women). In lace making there is needle lace and bobbin lace. When one says Lace Making it is bobbin lace that most people think of. It looks hard but it really isn’t – it is just methodical. We will start with basic patterns and then move on to making bookmarks (which are basically yardage lace).

Limit: 10 students, ages 16 and up.

Materials fee: approximately $10-15. Instructor will have extra supplies for purchase.

Students should bring:

  • 1 plain accent pillow with zipper--at least 18" X 18". This needs to be a pillow filled with a  single piece/pillow form NOT filled with stuffing OR  a similar sized pillow form and a cover-(no fur, sequins or adornment and the firmer the better)
  • an additional cloth to cover pillow when not working+
  • a piece of cardboard slightly smaller than pillow
  • a piece of old felt, wool blanket or an old wool sweater that got shrunk in the wash-slightly smaller than pillow
  • 24-30+ wooden clip clothespins
  • a variety of straight pins of good quality (at least 50 regular size and a few corsage or larger pins as well)
  • a skein of crochet thread size 30 (the most common size)-20 will also work at least one color, multiple colors could be fun (I'll have extra)
  • 20-40+ bamboo or wooden skewers/candy apple sticks (people could split packs).  These need to be at least 5" long and.or need to be cut down  ALSO need some beads that will fit on chosen skewers (preferably at least one with a flat edge)
  • a bottle of glue (white, wood or gorilla or whatever)
  • a pair of scissors for thread
  • a pair of craft scissors or cutters
  • a pin cushion would be useful

NOTE: Don't be afraid of the materials list! Most of these items can be found at thrift or dollar stores.
